For a second straight year in the Mayor's Cup rivalry between Union and RPI, the game as decided in a shootout.

Last season, Darion Hanson and Owen Savory went save for save with one another on opposite ends of the ice through a scoreless regulation and overtime and the sequel lived up to the original on Saturday night.

In the 8th annual Mayor's Cup, Union came in with three straight wins in the series - yes, that includes what went into the official record books as a tie last season. (somebody has to "win" the cup after all) There was an early feeling of deja vu in the building Saturday night as zeroes owned the scoreboard deep into the second period, but then Taylor Brierley gave Union a 1-0 lead. It was short-lived because RPI answered a little more than one minute later as Zack Dubinsky's equalizer held up until the end of regulation and it was back to overtime for the third time in Mayor's Cup history.

A scoreless OT set up another showdown between Savory and Hanson in a shootout and this time around, RPI's sophomore goalie came out on top. Savory made every stop while Patrick Polino and Todd Burgess scored the only goals in the shootout.

With the win, RPI ends a 3-year winless streak in the Mayor's Cup and gives head coach Dave Smith his first win in the rivalry game.
