The lack of choices when it comes to broadband has always been a problem for Capital Region residents. How can you save money on your internet? For Saratoga residents, some competition could be on the way.

For most of the Capital Region, there is only one choice for high-speed internet to your home - Spectrum. Some would say too the lack of competition for those services drives the price up. That's what happens when you the only game in town. Well, soon in Saratoga, it could be game on! More carriers mean more competition and lower prices, and that is what the new SiFi network will bring to the table.

According to Foothills Business Daily,  SIfI networks is set to start installing their own network of fiber cables within the next month. The first phase would involve laying 10,000 feet of cable and then testing that network to see if among other things it can handle being underground during an Upstate New York winter. If testing pans out some Saratoga homes could begin hooking into the new system in the Spring. SiFi would not provide the internet, but other providers would have access to the network to bring internet services to subscribers.

Sifi is a New Jersey-based company that is building what they call "fibercities" in several locales across the nation, including Saratoga Springs. SiFi says the cities are "...An open-access network allow(ing) multiple  service providers, enterprises and  carriers to connect to the network, broadening competition and choice."

Basically, access for more providers leads to more competition which leads to lower prices for internet services, which is right around the corner it seems in the Spa city.. Outside of the Saratoga Spring network, SiFi has not announced plans as of yet for building out their networks in other Captial Region cities.
