Nearly a month into the season, local products JP Sportman and Branden Cogswell are still playing well for the Stockton Ports, Class A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics.

Sportman leads the Ports in hitting at .302 while Cogswell checks in at .269. Both are seeing regular playing time. Sportman also leads the team in RBIs and stolen bases.

Cogswell possesses a great eye at the plate which has led him to drawing a team-high 12 walks. He has an on-base percentage of .380, which is first on the Ports.

The Ports are the high-A affiliate of the A's, which means both players are just one step below AA. You would have to imagine that each player will move up to AA before the end of the season. That process could be accelerated if both players keep putting up numbers like this.

Sportman (La Salle) and Cogswell (Shen) are two of several local products currently playing in professional baseball. Those players include Tommy Kahnle (Shaker/Rockies), Jeff Hoffman (Shaker/Blue Jays), Matt Gage (Broadalbin-Perth/Giants), Mike Fish (Bethlehem/Angels), Justin Brantley (Hudson/Indians), Brian O'Keefe (Colonie/Cardinals), Jaime Schultz (Maple Hill/Rays), Murphy Smith (Shen/Blue Jays), and Brendan Harris (Queensbury/Tigers).
