If you were unemployed in 2020 you might have to give back some of the money you received in benefits, but do you have to give it back?

There are nearly 20 million people living in New York state and nearly 1/4 of us received unemployment and enhanced pandemic unemployment benefits since this whole thing started last year. So that is nearly 5 million people collecting a smaller amount of money than their job paid and they have to pay tax on this money. Or do they?

It looks as though Congress is closing in on a bill that would include up to a $1400 direct payment to most Americans by March. This is part of President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief bill.
