This Saturday marks the running of the Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. This race dates back to as far as the first race run in 1864. Remember this weekend you can hear all the Travers Stakes coverage on 104.5 The Team's app as Kevin Rich anchors the coverage starting at Noon on Saturday and 1pm on Sunday. Before the biggest race of the summer starts this Saturday, let's look at the Top 5 Travers Stakes in the race's history.

Honorable Mention

#5 1930 Jim Dandy shocking Gallant Fox.

If you have a performance so memorable that Saratoga has a race named after you, then it's tough to keep you off the list. Gallant Fox was a Triple Crown winning horse who was upset by the historic long shot in Jim Dandy in the slop.

#4 1941 Whirlaway

As Andy Serling told us Tiz The Law is pacing to win the "Quadruple Crown" in 2020. Well back in 1941 Whirlaway did in fact pull off that feat. Whirlaway became the first American horse ever to win the Triple Crown plus the Travers Stakes.

#3 2012 Dead Heat

A Nose. A head. No nothing determined the winner in the 2012 Travers Stakes. The dead heat was the first dead heat in the race since 1874.

This one ranks high for me because I have watched hundreds of races and never saw a dead heat in person. Alpha and Golden Ticket put on a performance few fans like myself would forget. The roar of the crowd when the results were posted was an amazing moment at the Spa

#2 2015 Keen Ice wins, American Pharoah upset

Another race I was fortunate enough to be in attendance for. Shout out to my friend Jesse Dinneen who joined me in some nice seats for this incredible sports moment. American Pharoah had just ended the Triple Crown drought. Horse racing fans wanted to see how far Pharoah could go with his dominance. That summer, Saratoga turned into Pharoah-Toga. On Travers Day it was Keen Ice pulling off the win in an upset.

#1 Jaipur vs Ridan 1962

This race is one of the great horse races ever.  The battle between these two determined the best three year old in 1962. Plus this race clocked in at record time. The back and forth between these horses from start to finish makes it the greatest Travers Stakes race ever.
