The New York Yankees just received very bad news that ace starting pitcher Gerrit Cole will be out at least one to two months with an injury on his throwing arm and elbow.  They will need to be extremely aggressive and go after another starting pitcher as soon as possible.  One bright spot is the fact that just the other day earlier in the week Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised 518 product and Columbia grad Kevin Smith saying that he believe Smith is the best utility back up infielder they have on their roster right now.  Below is my quick take on this as seen in The Times Union:

Yankee manager Aaron Boone is on record saying Columbia grad Kevin Smith is the best option for a backup infielder with opening day approaching. Smith is having a good spring, and the Yankees like him. Smith has had good at bats and his glove is always stellar.  It would be a great local story if Smith makes the Yankees opening day roster and he's well on his way to joining the likes of Aaron Judge and Juan Sotto on the roster.

This was music to my ears hearing Boone say this about KJ.  I for one know how talented Kevin is especially when he flashes the leather with his glove.  He also has some extreme pop with his bat as well.  I hope KJ makes the opening day roster and sees some starting and playing time as the Yankees infield is relatively depleted at the current moment.  We will be following along to Kevin all season long very closely on both Big Board Sports with 104.5 The ESPN Radio and WNYT NewsChannel 13.
