What Can You Do?

The New York State DEC has set up an annual survey of wild turkeys. This helps them determine the population of turkeys and how they are faring across the state. All you have to do is be very observant. Throughout the month of August, if you see turkeys in and around your property, you are asked to fill out the survey to the best of your ability. Some questions include, how many, male or female, and other simple questions to log. It is important to try not to record the same turkey flock more than once. You can fill out the survey by clicking HERE.

Why Does the DEC Need The Data?

Not only does the data that you record from your observations determine the productivity and population of turkeys, but the wildlife managers in the state can also forecast hunting prospects for the fall and spring hunting seasons according to CBS 6 News.

Basil Seggos, the DEC Commissioner, is hoping that New Yorkers will take part in the annual survey. He said it is very important.

Citizen scientists provide important data that helps our biologists examine how factors such as weather, predation, and habitat conditions during the breeding and brood-rearing seasons impact turkey survival. Without the assistance of our volunteers, the task of monitoring turkey populations statewide would be far more difficult, and we encourage participation this summer to help enhance our knowledge of turkeys in New York.
