College Basketball Today
With conference titles already locked up for UCONN and Kansas the scene shifts today to the other power conferences, with championships and seeding on the line.
Jim Calhoun, Kemba Walker and UCONN wrapped up it’s fifth win in five days to take another Big East title last night in a thrilling last second win against Louisville in Madison Square Garden. The Kansas Jayhawks, number one seed hopeful, rolled to a twelve point victory over Texas to secure a Big Twelve title. And in a shocking, buzzer-beating upset Washington took down the fifteenth ranked Arizona Wildcats to secure the Pac-10 title and a birth in next week’s big dance.
Today, the nation’s focus will be on the remaining power conferences and their title games – each of which features an intriguing matchup. Ohio State, which outlasted Michigan will take on Penn State, who took down Michigan State today. Penn State played the Buckeyes close, losing by only three in their first matchup in Columbus. Their second matchup wasn’t so close, however. The eventual number one seed should handle Talor Battle and Penn State, but it’s well within the Nittany Lions’ range to give them a fight.
Kentucky and Florida will meet up in tomorrow’s SEC final after both teams beat their opponents by double digits today. The two are even matched, with each having beaten the other at home. Tomorrow’s final should be a good watch.
The best game in the country however, is likely to be the ACC title game which will
once again pit Duke against their cross-town rivals in the UNC Tar Heels. Roy Williams’ team started slow, but has come on to end the year as one of the hottest teams in the nation and winner of the ACC regular season title. They have had to survive several scares however, rallying to beat both Miami and Clemson in the past few days. Duke has lost two of their last five games, but has looked better in each of it’s ACC tournament games. And if there’s anything that Coach K’s team has showed us, it’s that if they shoot well, they’re capable of beating anyone. Today’s renewal of the rivalry should be an intensely close and hard fought game.
There’s a great slate of games today, including an A-10 final which will feature the Dayton Flyers trying to beat Richmond and steal an automatic bid. It’s all a prelude however, to tonight’s selection show. Get you’re brackets ready! It’s going to be fun!
