1956 — The Brooklyn Dodgers traded 36-year-old Jackie Robinson to the New York Giants for pitcher Dick Littlefield and $30,000. Robinson chose to retire rather than play for the Giants. (More info.)

1977 — A charter plane carrying the entire University of Evansville men’s basketball team and its coaches crashed and burned after taking off from the Evansville airport in Indiana. (More info.)

1983 — The Detroit Pistons beat the Denver Nuggets, 186-184 in triple-overtime, at McNichols Arena in the highest-scoring game in NBA history. (More info.)

1997 — Charles Woodson of the University of Michigan became the first defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy. (More info.)

2007 — The Mitchell Report on performance-enhancing drug use in Major League Baseball was released, naming 89 players who probably used the now-banned substances to gain a competitive advantage. (More info.)
