The stories begin to become more frequent but no less disturbing. Five weeks ago, a six year old in Virginia intentionally shot his first grade teacher. Tuesday, a kindergartener in upstate New York, was found with a mini arsenal in their backpack.

According to a report by Darian Stevenson of syracuse.com, a 5 year-old Syracuse kindergarten student was found with a gun magazine, ammunition and a razor blade in the student's backpack. The report said that no gun found. Police are trying to determine why the student had the items in the first place.

In contrast to reports that came out on Tuesday regarding the case against the 6 year-old shooter in Virginia, the Porter Elementary student did not appear to know that the items were in his backpack or how they got there in the first place. On Tuesday, usatoday.com reported that the 6-year-old Virginia student "constantly cursed at staff and teachers, chased students around and tried to whip them with his belt and once choked another teacher “until she couldn’t breathe,” according to a legal notice filed by an attorney for the wounded teacher."

Thankfully, this appears to be a completely different case but disturbing, just the same. It is a positive that no gun was found. Lt. Matthew Malinowski of the Syracuse Police Department confirmed to syracuse.com that only the gun magazine, ammunition and the razor blade were found. It's also a positive that the student did not appear know where the dangerous items came from. Two things are for sure, we have to keep lethal weapons away from children and we have to change something if our youngest students are considering deadly violence. Something is wrong.
