Last season the New York Rangers did the unthinkable, they published a letter to their fans explaining that they would be looking to the future and actually admitted to their fans that they were not trying to win right now. So how are they already competing and playing at a high level? Barry Melrose shares his thoughts.

Just last February Glen Sather and Gorton of the Rangers shared a letter on NYRangers.com. In the letter, it's clear they don't expect to contend any time soon.

"As we approach the trade deadline later this month and into the summer, we will be focused on adding young, competitive players that combine speed, skill and character. This may mean we lose some familiar faces, guys we all care about and respect. While this is part of the game, it's never easy. Our promise to you is that our plans will be guided by our singular commitment: ensuring we are building the foundation for our next Stanley Cup contender."

Below Barry Melrose tells us why he thinks they are "ahead of schedule".
