Columbia Grad Takes Cape MVP Hardware

The Capital District made its presence known this summer on the Cape....

Shen grad Justin Yurchak starred for the Bourne Braves while Union pitcher Jake Fishman saw some time with the Wareham Gateman and on Saturday night, Columbia grad Kevin Smith wrapped it all up.

Smith helped lead his team (Yarmouth-Dennis) to the Cape Championship Series title and went 6-12 with a homer and three RBI in the title series.

Smith, the Maryland shortstop, hit .301 for the year and is just one year away from being draft eligible. We have to assume that both he and Yurchak will get drafted this year, giving the Capital Region a presence in the draft for the fourth straight year.

Shaker grad Jeff Hoffman was taken in 2014 while Niskayuna grad Garrett Whitley was drafted in 2015. Ian Anderson of Shen was drafted in 2016, No. 3 overall, by the Atlanta Braves.
