ESPYs Preview Part 5: Best Game
We continue to break down the ESPYs here at 104.5 The Team, and we let you know the odds that your favorite New York teams/athletes can win their respective categories.
Category: Best Game
New York Team Involved: New York Rangers vs. Los Angeles Kings, Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Field: Auburn 34, Alabama 28 and Colts 45, Chiefs 44
About Rangers vs. Kings: Though this game didn't go the Rangers way, it was one of the best hockey games in recent memory. The double-overtime marathon that eventually ended with a goal from Alec Martinez gave the Kings the Stanley Cup Championship. Because of game length and game significance, this game certainly belongs in this category.
*I am a little curious as to how the United States vs. Russia Olympic hockey game didn't quite make this list, but I digress.
Colts vs. Chiefs: Even despite losing running back Jamaal Charles in the first quarter, the Chiefs raced out to huge lead in Indianapolis on Wild Card Weekend. KC led 38-10 in the third quarter, but Andrew Luck and the Comeback Colts used an offensive flurry to eventually win it, 45-44. Luck threw three second-half TD passes to engineer the surge.
Auburn vs. Alabama: With all due respect to the above games, there's no way this game doesn't win. Multiple missed 'Bama field goals kept the game close, and with one second left, the game was tied at 28-28. Tide head coach Nick Saban sent out redshirt freshman Adam Griffith (new kicker) to attempt a 57-yard attempt rather than go to overtime. His kick came up a few yards short and was returned 109 yards by Auburn's Chris Davis.
The win sent Auburn to the SEC title game, and eventually to the NCAA championship game, where the Tigers fell to Florida State.
