It may have been 60 years later than anticipated, but last night, Gwen Goldman finally pulled on the pinstripes for the New York Yankees.

Goldman served as the team's honorary "bat girl" in last night's game against the Los Angeles Angels. Goldman also threw out the ceremonial first pitch, for which she received a rousing ovation. She donned a full uniform, which was hung for her in a special locker room stall, and chatted with players, including Gerrit Cole, while the team warmed up and took batting practice.

When you look at the full story, this day was a LONG time coming for Gwen.

Sixty years ago, then-10 year old Gwen Goldman wrote to the Yankees, inquiring about being the team's bat girl. Thanks to the New York Post, we can read the team's response:

“While we agree with you that girls are certainly as capable as boys, and no doubt would be an attractive addition on the playing field, I am sure you can understand that in a game dominated by men a young lady such as yourself would feel out of place in a dugout,” - Roy Hamey, Yankees General Manager

How far we've come since the 1960s. Goldman was welcomed back to Yankee Stadium by a proud Brian Cashman, Aaron Boone and company, and was finally given the opportunity to live her dream with her hometown team. According to the Post's Elizabeth Karpen, we have Goldman's daughter to thank, who forwarded the letter to Brian Cashman and the team.

That set the wheels in motion, and the rest, as we now know, is history.
