NYS Issued Nearly 130,000 Tickets Between Christmas and New Year’s Day
The Governor's Traffic Safety committee announced that thousands of New York drivers were issued various types of tickets during holiday crackdown.
If you got pulled over and received a ticket for the holidays you are not alone. You join the 129,000 of other drivers in New York who got tickets during a very short period of time at the end of December.
Over any major holiday there are always going to be increased traffic patrols to be sure that everyone along the roads is driving safely. This means that they're cracking down on not only impaired drivers, but also people who are speeding and violating other driving laws as well.
From the report issued by the governor,
Of Those Tickets, 23,339 Were Issued for Speeding Offenses. Impaired Driving Resulted in 4,264 Tickets Issued Statewide.
It's important to add that over 4,000 tickets were issued for "distracted driving." While that would mostly involve seeing people that are texting while driving, they also look for drivers who might be distracted by other factors such as eating and drinking. They also consider distracted driving by interacting with other people in your vehicle.
Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed!
Almost 1,000 tickets were issued for not moving over for an emergency vehicle. Over 3,000 tickets were issued for not wearing a safety belt. It seems slightly ridiculous that in 2025 we're still having to tell people to put on a seat belt.
Just make sure to keep your eyes on the road, don't drink and drive, and always be aware of your surroundings. Let's stay safe out there.
