Jets v. Giants Game Recap
The 49th meeting between the two New York football teams had several storylines leading into it. Would Christian Hackenberg the Jets starting QB on paper for this season, generate points on a drive yet? Would the Giants have any spark shown from the backfield, which has been underwhelming all preseason? If you missed the game, here is a quarter by quarter synopsis for you.
First Quarter
The Jets offensive woes continued, and it started early. On the teams first possession, Hackenberg was sacked. After an Eli Manning interception to Juston Burris on the Giants first possession, the Jets set up shop on their own 3 yard line, and what happens? A safety three plays later as Matt Forte couldn't get out of the end zone before Jason Pierre Paul tackled him. The Jets come out in their second series on their own 11, and on the first play, Hackenberg throws a pick-six right to Landon Collins, DB for the Giants. Two three and outs, a pick-six, and a safety for the Jets. Nineteen unanswered points (9 for the defense) for the Giants, as the boys in blue take full command early.
First Quarter Score: 19 NYG - 0 NYJ
Second Quarter
He did it! After almost 2 and a half games of opportunities to generate a scoring drive, Hackenberg drove the field to the Giants 11 yard line, to get a field goal. One quarter was enough for Eli Manning, as Josh Johnson came on for the Giants. The "positive" of seeing points tacked on the board was short-lived for the Jets, as Hackenberg throws his second pick-six, this time bouncing right off the hands of his WR Robbie Anderson, and the Giants continue their complete domination.
Halftime Score: 29 NYG - 3 NYJ
The first half will probably be the last time we will see any starters for the rest of the preseason for both teams, and with the game already far from entertaining, the teams would try to make the game less dull. Bryce Petty the third string QB did his part. He threw two touchdowns, one to rookie WR Ardarius Stewart and another to RB Bilal Powell, which has to be somewhat comforting to Jets fans. With the QB competition seemingly up for grabs after tonight, any effective play at QB looks good, and Petty did just that. A productive 3rd Q from the guys in green as the Jets cut into the lead.
Third Quarter Score: 29 NYG - 18 NYJ
Fourth Quarter
More of the "Bryce Petty Show", as the third year Baylor product connected with rookie WR Ardarius Stewart again, this time for a 21 yard TD, and the Jets close to within a touchdown from the Giants, after an early 4th Q field goal from the G-men. With a little over 4 minutes left, Petty, 12-15 for 226 yards with 3 TD's, went out for the final drive to try and upend the Giants, down 7. About to run the two minute drill, Petty gets tackled and goes down with what seems to be a leg injury, ending his very productive night at 15-18, 250 yards, and 3 TD's. Hackenberg came back in and drove right down the field and threw for a TD to Frankie Hammond, however the 2 pt conversion from Elijah McGuire came up short.
A very up and down game from both sides ends, with the Giants beating the Jets in a thrilling 4th quarter, 32-31.
Final Score: 32 NYG - 31 NYJ
