After going 0-10 this season, longtime Union football head John Audino has "retired."

I put retired in quotes because it seems as if something fishy is going on in Schenectady, and I'm not the only one who thinks so:

Audino had been at Union for 24 years - and had been largely successful. He went 152-89 and led the Dutchmen to five NCAA tournament appearances. He also coached 145 Liberty League All-Academic selections.

Despite his success, Audino had struggled over the last three seasons, going just 5-25 overall.

But still, I've rarely seen a Division III head coach leave/fired/replaced for performance reasons. As long as the team succeeds in the community and the classroom, a coach is largely safe by my experience.

It feels as if the brass at Union was tired of the losing and decided it was time to make a change. Thus, the "retirement" doesn't feel legit. Audino deserved to keep his job because of his legacy and his academic success with his team.

Furthermore, this feels forced because of this:

If he's looking at other coaching opportunities, is it really retirement?
