The Buffalo Sabres returned to the ice for their practice since the all-star break began.

The Sabres have played few games than most teams in the NHL, due to two games being postponed because of the Christmas weekend blizzard and the fact they won't get back on the ice for game action until this Saturday.

Buffalo hosts the Calgary Flames at KeyBank Center, which is a rare 12:30 pm start time.

The Sabres are three points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the final wild card spot, but are four points back of the Washington Capitals for the other wild card spot, with three games in hand. They also have four games in hand on the New York Islanders, who are three points ahead of the Sabres.

The NHL trade deadline is March 3rd and there's been a great deal of talk around the Sabres potentially making a splash move, such as acquiring forward Timo Meier from the San Jose Sharks, and giving up a package of picks and prospects.

On Thursday, Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams told the media that they will not sacrifice the long-term plan for short-term success.

Adams also said that they will always be in on potential trades but that they will not do anything to jeopardize the team's future success.

It almost sounds like that the asking price for someone like Meier is too rich, even if the Sabres have the most cap space of almost anyone and the best pool of prospects in the NHL.

We will have to wait and see what (if anything) the Sabres do by 3 pm on March 3rd.
