It’s always nice to see great coaches rewarded for their hard work, and that’s the case for UAlbany baseball coach Jon Mueller who was named America East Coach of the Year. Nobody works harder or gets more out of his players than Mueller, and this year’s team finished first in the America East Conference. The Stillwater legend has been at UAlbany 22 seasons, and his teams are always competitive and grind through it, just like their head coach who the players love playing for.

Mueller was not the only Great Dane to bring home awards in the America East this season. Johnny Marti and Brad Malm were named to the All-Conference First Team while Ray Weber and Josh Gurnack were named to the All-Conference Second Team. Anthony Germinerio was named to the All-Rookie Team as well.
Coach Mueller joined Big Board Sports to discuss winning this award for the second time in three seasons and you can listen to that above. Below you can find some of the overall takeaways from the interview!

  • It was a surprise this year for Coach Mueller but maybe the balance of the Great Danes side was more difficult this season.
  • It is a testament to the student athletes and the rest of the coaching staff and when you work at a place that give you great support it makes it more enjoyable. It is something that they all can celebrate but the season is not over!
  • Coach is not much of a big speech guy and kind of just goes about his business with his team and everyone knows what they need to do. Coach keeps even keel and leads by example by trying to eliminate excuses. Execute at a high level and that leads to success.
