Gmac Heads Back To Syracuse After 2 Great Years At Siena
The Gerry McNamara era has officially begun in Central New York, as the former Orange standout returns to lead the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball as head coach following his departure from the Siena Saints. For Syracuse fans, it’s a full-circle moment—one that blends nostalgia with renewed hope for the program’s future.

McNamara, best known for his clutch performances during Syracuse’s 2003 national championship run, has steadily built his coaching résumé over the past decade. After serving as a longtime assistant under Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim, McNamara gained valuable experience in recruiting, player development, and game strategy. His recent stint at Siena showcased his ability to lead a program, instill discipline, and compete consistently within the MAAC. He also won the MAAC in just his second season and nearly defeated #1 overall seed Duke back on March 19th in Greenville South Carolina.
Now, he steps into one of the most scrutinized roles in college basketball. Syracuse has experienced uneven seasons in recent years, and the expectations remain high in the ACC. McNamara brings a deep understanding of the program’s culture, but also a fresh voice that could help modernize the team’s approach—particularly in areas like tempo, spacing, and transfer portal utilization.
Perhaps most importantly, McNamara’s passion for Syracuse is undeniable. As a former player who thrived on the Carrier Dome stage, he understands the connection between the team and its fan base. That emotional investment could play a key role in re-energizing both recruiting and game-day atmosphere.
While questions remain about how quickly he can turn the program into a contender, McNamara’s hire signals a commitment to tradition with an eye toward evolution. For Syracuse, it’s not just about bringing back a familiar name—it’s about trusting one of its own to lead the next chapter.
