What’s Your Baseball Song?

What’s your baseball song? It seems like a pretty simple question if you’re a baseball fan, right? Maybe not so fast. Rustin Dodd, a writer for the Athletic, was on The Drive with Charlie and Dan today. He and Andy McCullough wrote an article called “From Bob Dylan to the Strokes: The 30 greatest baseball songs of all time.” At least a third of the songs, I had never heard of or I didn’t remember them and so, that’s not a good thing either. But who am I to say, it’s their list! How could they not have “Centerfield” by John Fogerty? Ok, it’s their list.

Dodd said they took a lot of good natured jabs for leaving songs off the listhat people thought strongly should be on there. Music is subjective to the listener or the fan. Rustin Dodd’s taste in music is most likely different enough from mine or Dan’s, and the fact that his list would be different should be no surprise. But one thing was clear, we all felt that music was important to sports. Dodd briefly talked about how drummers leading army battalions into battle led to marching bands at football games and brass bands at baseball games and now players have their own walk up songs.

Many famous musicians are big sports fans. Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder is a renowned Cubs fan and has sung “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at Wrigley Field during the 7th inning stretch and Rush’s lead singer Geddy Lee has a baseball memorabilia collection that Cooperstown would like to get it’s hands on.

No matter what, music makes sporting events more exciting. My 30 songs are different from your 30 songs and ours are both different from Dans. Send us some of your favorite baseball songs and will play some of it, if we can find it and give you credit!

And by the way, my baseball song would be the old 1960’s “Meet The Mets” song. I’ll find that and play some of it.
