1962 — Y.A. Tittle of the New York Giants threw a record-tying seven touchdown passes against the Washington Redskins in a 49-34 win at Yankee Stadium. (More info.)

1973 – Elmore Smith of the Los Angeles Lakers blocked an NBA-record 17 shots in a game against the Portland Trail Blazers. (More info.)

1981 — The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Yankees, 9-2, in Game 6 and won the World Series by coming back from a two-games-to-none deficit. (More info.)

1995 — The Atlanta Braves beat the Cleveland Indians, 1-0, in Game 6 at Fulton County Stadium and won the World Series, becoming the first franchise to win a title in three cities (Boston, 1914; Milwaukee, ’57; Atlanta ’95). (More info.)

1997 – The NBA announced the hiring of Dee Kantner and Violet Palmer — the first women to officiate a major-league all-male sports league. (More info.)
