State police seize over 500 pounds of cannabis
After a police chase last week starting on I-87 in Warren County ended with the driver going the wrong way on the Northway in Saratoga County, state police were shocked to see what they uncovered. Following a crash involving a state police cruiser, the chase was over, and over 500 pounds of cannabis was seized. The two that were in the car from St. Lawrence County, New York are now facing multiple felony charges.
The two from the car facing these charges are 39 year old Torrey Jackson and 29 year old Tori Rushlow from Massena. According to state police Jackson is facing nine charges, while Rushlow faces 8. They were supposed to appear in court this past Tuesday, before it was adjourned.
As mentioned Jackson faces 9 charges, including first-degree criminal possession of cannabis, and two counts of second-degree assault. Rushlow faces very similar charges, like one count of second-degree assault.
Criminal defense attorney Adam Staier says the amount of cannabis recovered is what stands out. "When you find 500 pounds, which is quite a bit, if you think recreational is three ounces. 500 pounds is a lot. So I think the fear from a prosecutor’s perspective or from law enforcement perspective is that it’s being trafficked from somewhere to somewhere,” says Staier.
According to the Office of Cannabis Management, you are allowed to carry and transport up to three ounces of cannabis and 24 grams of concentrates within the state. To put it in perspective, one pound equals 448 grams, making the over 500 pounds seized equal over 224,000 grams of cannabis.
Their appearance in Wilton Town Court was rescheduled to August 11th.
