Are New York gas prices really going down? Just 4 months ago we were happy to see prices at the pump fall below $4 a gallon. Today there are several gas stations under $3.50 a gallon but only a few around $3 a gallon.

This Summer I researched the cheapest gas stations in the Capital Region with only 2 offered prices below $4 a gallon. Today I have an update for you and prices are headed in the right direction. How low will they go? We will see but for now, these are the 6 cheapest with one dropping below $3 a gallon.

According to AAA, the current average price for one gallon of gas in the country is $3.31/gallon, which is down 60 cents from Summer. However the New York State average is $3.63. The New York average is down 27 cents from one month ago and just 20 cents down from this time one year ago.

Will prices continue to drop? CNN Business reports that crude oil prices have taken a plunge but companies such as Exxon and Chevron continue to prosper. To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
