We've been talking all year long about our local products in professional baseball, and perhaps none remain more visible than Maple HIll graduate Jamie Schultz.

Schultz, currently playing for the AA Montgomery Biscuits of the Southern League, earned Southern League All-Star Game honors after going 5-3 with a 3.55 ERA in the first half of the season. The game is tomorrow in Montgomery.

Schultz' greatest asset is his velocity, coupled with a great curveball, which leads him to devastating strikeout totals. His 85 Ks in 71 innings rank him tied for second in the Southern League.

His only flaw this season has been his control, at times. He has 46 walks in those 71 innings, leading him to high pitch counts and shorter outings.

We spoke with Biscuits' broadcaster Aaron Vargas about Schultz's first half, what improvements he can make going forward, his control issues, and since the Biscuits are a Rays affiliate, we asked him about Garrett Whitley. Whitley, the No. 13 pick in the draft out of Niskayuna, will presumably sign a contract once he graduates high school.
