Maryland shortstop and Columbia HS grad Kevin Smith has been put on the initial Brooks Award Watch List, the award given to the nation's best shortstop.

Maryland is 19-17 and 5-4 in the Big 10. Smith has played in and started all 36 games for the Terrapins. He's hitting .271 which is third on the team. He has four home runs and 15 RBIs on the year to go along with a .327 on-base percentage.

Smith helped lead Maryland to the Super Regionals last season as a freshman and should continue to help the Terps as the season progresses. He could be a pro prospect when all is said and done in College Park.

He's not the only Capital Region native who will wear the Red and Black. Shen basketball star Kevin Huerter has committed to Maryland and will join the team next year. He led Shen to a state basketball title in 2014-15 and to a Regional title this season.
