Rookie Steven Matz had a memorable debut for the Mets on Sunday, helping lead the Blue and Orange to a 7-2 victory over the Reds at Citi Field.

The left-hander tossed 7.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out six. Here's his first career strikeout:

Perhaps more impressive was that the pitcher went 3-3 at the plate with four RBIs. For a pitcher, that's incredible? For a team that's starving for offense, that's even more incredible.

Matz should give Mets fans quite a bit of optimism, as the left-hander should team with Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard to form a vaunted starting rotation for years to come.

Wheeler's injury and the jettison of Dillon Gee to AAA Las Vegas gave Matz the clear path to the majors this season.

The Mets open up a series with the Cubs tomorrow night at Citi Field.
