A Petco Park First Was Done By This New York Met On Monday

Petco Park is the home of the San Diego Padres. The stadium opened in 2004 with some 1400+ Padres home games having been played. Yet in that time span, no Major League Baseball player had ever hit for "the cycle" (a single, a double, a triple and a home run in one game), until Monday night.

The New York Mets were continuing their California road trip taking on the San Diego Padres in the first game of the four game series. The highlight reel of the Mets 11-5 included a lot of Eduardo Escobar, who ended up with 4 hits in 5 at-bats, while driving in 6 runs. The four hits happened to be pretty special.

The Amazin's third-baseman, singled in the first inning, doubled in the fourth, homered in the eighth and tripled in the ninth. According to MLB.com, Escobar became the first Mets player since Scott Hairston in 2012 to hit for a cycle and the first player from any club to do so at Petco Park.

Many baseball experts, including ESPN's Buster Olney on The Drive with Charlie and Dan, feel that the addition of Eduardo Escobar may have been as important as the signing of Max Scherzer. His steady veteran presence has unified the Mets clubhouse that is reminiscent of championship chemistry.

Certainly Escobar's teammates are happy to have him. “It was really fun to watch what he did today,” Monday's starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco told Anthony DiComo of mlb.com. “To run for the triple, the homer, all that kind of stuff, I’m going to appreciate that.”

Special things happen in special seasons. The New York Mets have already thrown a combined no-hitter this season. Add to that a player hitting for the cycle. Maybe a "Subway World Series" to top it off? Let's hope.
