New York Little League Team On The Doorstep Of World Series
There are over 180,000 Little League teams around the world, featuring over 2.6 million young baseball players. This week, that tremendous field will be narrowed down to 20 teams for the 2022 Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. One of those teams may be representing New York.
2022 will be the first time that the World Series field will be expanded to 20 from 16. Massapequa Coast Little League (Massapequa is on Long Island) was the winner of the New York State championship and has been participating in the Metro bracket in the Little League Regionals in Bristol, Connecticut. On Saturday, Massapequa defeated New Jersey champion, Toms River East, 6-3 in extra innings.
According to Christopher Scarglato of nypost.com, the game was tied 3-3 after six innings of regulation play. Then "Massapequa Coast scored three runs in the top of the seventh. Christian Bekiers hit a one-out double, went to third on a single by Joey Lionetti and scored on a wild pitch for the eventual winning run. Mikey Castellano then hit a two-run home run that cleared the wall in left-center field."
Massapequa Coast Little League coach Roland Clark told nypost.com how proud he was of his team's resilience. "The boys knew it was going to be close. The reaction [to extra innings] was one of confidence. There was no doubt.”. Massapequa Coast Little League will take its next step towards Williamsport on Monday afternoon when they will take on Fairfield American of Connecticut Monday at 1 p.m. Fairfield American defeated Cumberland Little League of Rhode Island by a score of 3-1 in their game on Saturday. Best of luck the rest of the way to New York's team!
