Heading into the Australian Open, Serena Williams was riding a 17 match win streak but that came to an end when she lost to Ekaterina Makarova.

For years now, Serena Williams has been a winning force at the Australian Open.  Yesterday that all changed when Ekaterina Makarova beat her 6-2,6-3.  Makarova was the lowest ranked woman in the fourth round of the Aussie Open, so the elimination of Williams comes as a bit of a surprise. When asked about the match and how she though Makarova played, Williams had this to say:

I think she played really well. She went for broke on a lot of her shots. I made 37 errors. That kind of tells the story of the match.

Williams was dealing with an ankle injury she suffered two weeks ago while training, but doesn't blame the injury.  ESPN's Joanne C. Gerstner said that Williams usual determination for winning was not present on the court.
