The 40-day Saratoga racing meet is off to a great start with the handle up 18 percent and paid attendance was 102,000 for the opening weekend.

Could this be the year that horse trainer and Mechanicville native Chad Brown capture the elusive Kentucky Derby crown? Out of eighteen horses in the field he has two and one is the odds-on favorite.

Attendance was once again over 1 million, and for the third time in the last four years a new all sources handle record was set at the Spa.

The Saratoga racing season starts next week, and it gets no better. Opening day on Thursday never gets old.

There wasn’t much respect shown for Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike when the post positions were drawn for Saturday’s running of the Belmont Stakes.

After the watching the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, Mechanicville trainer Chad Brown sets himself up for the Travers Stakes at Saratoga in August.

The Preakness Stakes is not until May 21st, but there is no way Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike is going to win. I am still shocked he won the Derby.

Saturday's Kentucky Derby will be interesting to watch for people in the Capital Region. Not only is it the biggest horserace of the season, but there are a couple of local ties to the "Run For The Roses". One is a horse and the other is a trainer.

Trainer Chad Brown could not have asked for a better post position for the Kentucky Derby. Zandon will start from gate 10, which is right in the middle.

As you get deeper into August, the weekends get bigger at Saratoga Race Course. This weekend is no exception. Friday looks to be a terrific day at the Spa highlighted by the 8th running of the Tale of The Cat handicap. Saturday will feature two big stakes races, the 116th running of the Saratoga Special and the main event on Saturday, the Fourstardave Handicap. Chad Brown's Raging Bull will be the horse to beat in that one and Sunday is the first giveaway of the year featuring the Saratoga Cooler Bag. Giveaways are limited, so come early.

For the fourth consecutive year, Chad Brown is the top trainer in the nation.
