Former New England Patriots wide receiver has signed a 2-year, $12 million contract with the Denver Broncos.

Man, you talk about a shift at the top of the AFC; former New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker has signed with the Denver Broncos.  Wes Welker had 100+ receptions in five of his six seasons with the Patriots.  Welker averaged 112 receptions, 1,243 yards, and 6 touchdowns in each season of his six years with New England.

Wes Welker is basically a receiver that dominated between the 20’s.  He averaged 112 catches each season, but only six touchdown receptions with the Patriots.  This is why Welker is a good weapon, but not a top-five wide receiver.  Welker is great at moving the chains.  He’s a great possession receiver, but he has never had 10 touchdown receptions in a single season.

This is also why no team is breaking the bank to acquire Welker.  He’s definitely a valuable asset, but he’s not going to dominate in the red zone.  He’ll be a significant upgrade in Denver and key target for Peyton Manning, but I doubt he will score a lot of touchdowns.  The New England Patriots are reportedly perusing St. Louis Rams unrestricted free agent Danny Amendola to fill the void left by Welker.
