Eight Capital Region high school basketball teams had made it to their respective classes' Final Fours in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships this weekend. The 15 boys final four and championship games were played at the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens falls starting on Friday. The 15 games for the girls were played at Hudson Valley Community College, Friday through Sunday.

We'll start with the Class AA boys. Section 2 winner Green Tech took down Section 6 champ Jamestown 61-31 in the semi-finals on Friday night before falling in the finals to Section 1 powerhouse Mount Vernon 55-45.

The first Capital Region team to win a championship was the Class A Averill Park girls team. The state's number one ranked team did little to dispel that honor, taking down Section 9 champion West Babylon in the semis 56-36. Then the Section 2 champ took down Section 1 power Tappen Zee 54-48 on Saturday to win the title. Congratulations to Averill Park!

In the Class B boys, Section 2 Cinderella Story Icabod Crane took their magical season to its peak by knocking off Section 6 champ Allegany-Limestone 53-43 on Saturday afternoon in the semi-finals. Then came their crowning moment by finishing Section III winner Friends Academy 63-62 in an absolute comeback thriller at the Cool Insuring Arena. It was Icabod Crane's first state championship in boys basketball. Congratulations to Coach Will Ferguson and the Riders.

It was no surprise that #1 in NYS ranked Schalmont's girls basketball team completed the sweep of Class B state titles for Section 2. Schalmont powered by Section 3 winner General Brown 52-42 in the semis before just getting by Section 5 winner Waterloo 56-54 on Sunday morning. Congratulations to Schalmont's girls basketball team!

In Class C, the Stillwater Warriors almost got there. They defeated Section 6 champ Salamanca 64-56 in the semi-finals on Friday before falling to Section 4 champ Newfield 87-62 in the finals on Saturday night. In the Class C girls, #1 in NYS Duanesburg got surprised by Section 4 winner Newark Valley 68-40 in the semi-finals on Saturday.

For the boys in Class D, Section 2 champ Oppenheim/Ephratah-St. Johnsville got knocked off in the semi-finals by Section 5 winner Avoca/Prattsburgh 59-42. In Class D girls, Section 2 winner Hartford Central lost their semi-final game to Section 3 champ Copenhagen 51-40. Congratulations to all of the participants, coaches and staff for an awesome tournament.
