Move over Syracuse, there is a sports dome coming to the Capital Region and it's not going to be used for a college team. It's being built for a local high school.
Eight Capital Region high school basketball teams had made it to their respective classes' Final Fours in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships this weekend. The 15 boys final four and championship games were played at the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens falls starting on Friday. The 15 games for the girls were played at Hudson Valley Community College, Friday through Sunday.
It was a cold Wednesday night in the Capital Region but some high school basketball teams brought their own heat to the Section II scoreboard. There were 10 match-ups in boys basketball on the schedule and 14 more for the girls. A big congratulations goes out to Tom Galvin the girls basketball coach at Bishop Maginn. Tom won his 400th game as a head coach on Tuesday with their decisive win over Loudonville Christian.
It was a busy schedule in Section II Friday night with 34 games on the schedule for boys basketball and another 29 match ups for the girls. A big shout out to everyone new that has included us in your score distributions this week. We greatly appreciate it.
Section 2 Athletics has announced a condensed plan for the 2021 sports calendar. The plan has been submitted to the county health departments for approval. If approval is granted high-risk sports would be able to begin as early as February 1 st.
In this crazy COVID-19 world hearing that any student-athlete will get a chance to compete and do what they love is huge! Today Section 2 Athletics made their ruling on Winter sports based on the risk level of the sports. This is great news for the Capital Region because this means we get to see our High School athletes do what they love safely. The decision to play starting on December 14th is set for "Low and Moderate Risk Sports" and pending approval for "High-Risk Sports".
