The Buffalo Bills are the Super Bowl favorites heading into the 2022 NFL season. They have arguably the best roster in the NFL.

You could have argued the Bills had the best roster last season in the league, now they add the likes of Von Miller at edge rusher, Rodger Saffold at offensive line, Tim Settle and Jordan Phillips at defensive tackle, O.J. Howard at tight end and Jamison Crowder at wide receiver.

However, the price you pay for being a great team is the fact it's harder to maintain your players, because they are worth a high salary.

The salary cap is meant to create a more even playing field. General manager Brandon Beane has done an outstanding job at keeping guys, such as linebacker Matt Milano and cornerback, Taron Johnson.

The Bills are paying huge salaries to the likes of Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs and Von Miller. Safety Jordan Poyer has one year remaining on his contract and just hired Drew Rosenhaus as his new agent, so he will be looking for an extension.

Another player who will need a new contract, sooner rather than later, is tight end Dawson Knox.

Knox is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The 26-year-old is due $2.5 million in his base salary in 2022.

How much will Knox command in a new deal? The new contract the Cleveland Browns just gave tight end David Njoku is a key to that answer.

The Browns signed Njoku to a 4-year, $56.75 million deal with $28 million guaranteed. That's an average base salary of $14 million per year...

Njoku has similar stats to Knox and many believe Knox has been more impressive in his young career.

Spotrac now has Knox's market value (which projects how much he should/will get) at an average annual salary of $12.4 million per season; with a 4-year, $50 million contract.

The Bills will need to keep Knox. Having a very good or great receiving tight end is critical in today's NFL and a key to offensive success for a team who loves to pass the ball.

The problem is both Ed Oliver and Tremaine Edmunds need new contracts. All three will likely not return together in 2023. The Bills might have to part ways with at least one of them...
