Kevin Ware broke his leg in gruesome fashion during yesterday's NCAA Tournament game between Louisville and Duke. Some are going so far as to say that it is the most gruesome injury they have ever seen. That begs the question: was Kevin Ware's injury the most horrific in the history of sports?

While Ware's injury was certainly horrific, and by no means are we trying to minimize it, there have been a number of gruesome injuries that rival it in terms of their severity and their outward appearance.

The first of many that come to mind was Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann's broken leg at the hands of the New York Giants and Lawrence Taylor, as well as Jack Tatum's hit on Darryl Stingley that resulted in Stingley spending the rest of his life as a quadriplegic.

Of course, one of the huge differences between those injuries and the injury suffered by Ware is the fact that when the Theismann and Stingley injuries occurred, there was no such thing as high definition television or the sheer quantity of camera angles that we possess today. SportsCenter didn't run from 11 pm to 3 pm, and there wasn't the Internet to see the video a million times on at any time of the day or night.

So was Kevin Ware's broken leg the worst injury in the history of sports? Take our poll and, if you vote no, let us know what you think the worst injury in sports history is in the comments section below.
