Michael Conforto, the Mets top hitting prospect and 2014 first-round pick, could be getting closer to the big leagues, reports the New York Daily News.

The Oregon State product has spent just six weeks with AA Binghamton but is hitting a robust .325 with five homers and 25 RBIs. He's had just 182 at-bats in AA.

He hit .283 in 46 games with High-A St. Lucie earlier this season. He spent last year in Brooklyn where he played in the New York-Penn League.

He also starred in this year's Futures Game during All-Star Weekend. He went 2-2 at the plate and then did this on defense in LF.

The Daily News has reported that Conforto could be called up as early as Thursday to help the Mets struggling offense.

But, the Mets could also be reluctant to promote their top prospect.

'“It’s a bigger jump for a hitter than a pitcher,” a Mets person said. “So to think Conforto could come up and do what (Steven) Matz did, or any of the young pitchers, that usually doesn’t happen with young hitters.

“Look at (Kevin) Plawecki. He’s a really good hitter and he’s just starting to figure it out a little bit after a couple of months in the big leagues. And because of the way the club is struggling to hit, the expectations from the fans and the media for Conforto would be unrealistic.”'
