New York High School Team’s 8-0 Season Tackled By Alleged Assault

About to embark on their post-season playoffs, an 8-0 high school football team in Clyde, New York was forced to shut down their season because an alleged assault that involved several of their varsity players.

According to Louise Hoffman Broach of The Finger Lake Times, Clyde-Savannah Junior/Senior High School canceled their home football game against Marcus Whitman/Bloomfield scheduled for last Friday night due to a police investigation of an alleged assault involving several members of the varsity football team. Clyde-Savannah forfeited the game. Though the school district nor police would confirm the information, social media posts regarding the incident paint a dark picture.

Superintendent of Schools for Clyde-Savannah, Michael Hayden said in a statement that was quoted in fltimes.com, “While we understand the community’s concerns and desire for information, we must emphasize that, due to an ongoing investigation and the confidentiality of student matters, we are unable to divulge specific details regarding the situation. As a school district, we take matters of student behavior very seriously. Our primary focus remains the safety and well-being of all students. We are actively cooperating with law enforcement to address this matter appropriately."

The fltimes.com said that based on several social media posts that provided similar accounts of the incident, the incident allegedly occurred in the locker room last Tuesday after football practice. The article said that several older football players allegedly ganged up on a younger player. To make matters more disturbing, if possible, the alleged assault was sexual in nature. The district would not confirm the details provided.

The article says there are allegations that the incident was recorded on video and distributed. Apparently one student who received the video, immediately showed it to his grandfather, who called the police. The Clyde Police Department issued a their own statement to the media saying, "the Clyde Police Department, with assistance from the New York State Police and Wayne County Sheriff's Office, have been been conducting an investigation — which is active and ongoing — regarding the assault in the village of Clyde," the statement read. "The case is of a sensitive nature, so limited information is available at this time. When further information is available we will notify the public."
