Quick Action And Fast Thinking Saves Colonie Little League Boy
Well thinking and no panic very well may have saved a little boys life in Colonie Monday night. An 11 year old little leaguer was hit by a pitch right near the heart and had to be resuscitated by police and other local officials after collapsing to the dirt after the pitch crumpled him to the dirt. Police brought in a defibrillator and used that.
Colonie NY police aren't disclosing the young fella's name..he is said to be resting comfortably in a local hospital as of this writing.
The boy was hit by a pitch and local paramedics say it caused a condition known as commotio cordis, which seems to be rare but occurs when there is a blow to the heart at exactly the moment of the right fraction of a second to disrupt the hearts electric rhythms. The numbers say 65% of those that suffer this abnormalty die. However the situation is extremly rare, causing the loss of life only 3 to 4 times per year according to stats given by Peter Berry, deputy chief of the Colonie EMS department. Berry claimed in his 23 years on the job this is the 1st such time he has seen this happen in his district.
Colonie little league director Frank Prevratil, who coaches the other team the young boy was playing was also the qst to get to the kid. He and a police officer started to perform CPR right away. Seems the save of the boys life all went like clock work, without panic, and organized.
