Schenectady’s Union College Football Team is On a Historic Winning Streak
They're on a winning streak...and they're not losing!
(Please forget that you read this article if the team loses this Saturday against Hobart. Thank you.)
November 30, 2019. That was the last time that the Union Dutchmen football took the field, a game that saw them lose in the National Tournament. Before the playoffs began, however, the team saw perfection, going a perfect 10-0 during the regular season. This perfect season followed a successful end to the 2018 campaign, too, which saw the team win its final three games.
As a matter of fact, the last time the Dutchmen lost in the regular season was October 13th.
Last Saturday, the Dutchmen visited Rochester, winning on the road by a 35-9 final. According to the Union Dutchmen team website, the team made history with that win, the kind of history that no Dutchmen team has done before.
Here's how good this team has been:
"With the victory, Union (7-0, 3-0 in Liberty League) surpassed the previous record streak of 19 regular-season games set between the 1992-94 seasons." - Union College Athletics team website
So, they haven't just been good. They've been historically good.
The Dutchmen Offense is Firing on All Cylinders
Offensively, Union has been one of the best in the Liberty League. They've scored 33 touchdowns to lead the league, and their points per game total is second in the league, just half a point behind Ithaca, whom the Dutchmen play on November 6th.
Dutchmen QB Will Bellamy has thrown for the second-most touchdowns in the league, and also boasts the best passing efficiency rating at 164.1. His performance has led to strong performances in the wide receiver position, with Andre Ross Jr. and Robbie Tolbert the first and third-ranked wideouts in touchdowns this year.
Meanwhile, The Defense Has Been FEASTING For Union
While the offense has been good, the defense has been GREAT. Only Ithaca has racked up more sacks this season, as Union's 17 rank second in the league. Their secondary has taken back two interceptions for touchdowns, again, something only Ithaca has matched. Union has allowed just 86 TOTAL points this season on defense, good for 12.3 points against for game, a number that is third in the Liberty League, but trails No. 1 by just over two points.
The Regular Season is Nearing Its Close, and the Playoffs Draw Closer
Stop me if you've heard this before, but Union and Ithaca will battle until the end for the Liberty League regular season title. Ithaca boasts one more league win (4) than Union (3), but the season will be decided when the two teams meet in a few weeks.
Nationally, the Dutchmen currently sit as the No. 12-ranked team in Division 3 College Football, according to D3Football.com. Ithaca, meanwhile, sit three spots behind Union at No. 15. The top sixteen teams advance to the Division III College Football National Tournament (more than four teams...WHAT???), and play a bracket-style tournament for the national title.
The Dutchmen continue their season this Saturday against Hobart, before visiting Ithaca on November 6th. Each game they play in the regular season has a bit more meaning, however, as each game has a bit of history on the line.
