For New York sports fanatics, 2023 is heating up like another very special year. If you are a "New York" NBA and/or NHL fan, 1994 was one for the memory banks. And, something happened on Wednesday that hasn't occurred since '94.

Former New York Knicks legend Patrick Ewing has worked hard to prepare for his first head coaching opportunity. Since retiring from the NBA, Ewing spent 15 years as an assistant coach for the Wizards, Bobcats (Hornets) and Magic. Finally, in 2017 Ewing's alma mater Georgetown University tabbed him as the head coach of their men's basketball program. It was truly a dream come true for the NBA Hall of Famer. Dreams eventually end.

These are great experiences for student-athletes. Experiences are recruiting tools. Siena men's basketball coach Carm Massariello knows how important these types of games are on many levels. First, the Saints will receive a nice check for playing in the game. Mid-major programs need guarantee games to survive. Next, the mid-Atlantic states are a nice recruiting area for Coach Carm. There are plenty of great high school basketball student-athletes in the Southern New Jersey, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore area that Massariello would like to introduce to Siena College. Lastly, his players get to play against a team coached by a New York basketball legend.

As we all practice "Social Distancing" maybe we could all learn from former New York Knicks Forward Charles Oakley. Oakley has been extremely vocal about his dislike for team owner James Dolan, which didn't bother the Knicks' fanbase very much but now he continues to take swings at his former teammate Patrick Ewing.

The New York Knicks finally made their debut on the ESPN Michael Jordan 10 part documentary "The Last Dance" last night. Obviously the story is focused on Jordan and his Chicago Bulls but I couldn't help but wonder if my favorite team, the 1990 Knicks' were just a footnote in MJ's legacy. ESPN senior NBA writer Chris herring joined Levack and Goz to talk about the team he covered for the Wall Street Journal, The Knicks.

The New York Knicks have fired head coach David Fizdale. The debate as to how much of this terrible 4-18 start is truly his fault can happen another time. Right now I'm trying to think of anyone that might actually stand a chance of turning the Knicks into a winning basketball team in the near future. Here are the five candidates I'd like to see coach the Knicks.

Former NBA Player and Coach Don Nelson did an interview with Bryant Gumble of HBO's Real Sports last night and the man is interesting to say the least. Nelson now lives in Hawaii on the island of Maui where he grows flowers, coffee and cannabis. You'd think a former NBA coach living in Hawaii growing and smoking pot while hosting legendary poker games would be the craziest part of the interview, you'd be wrong. Nelson shares the story of when he tried to trade Patrick Ewing.

It's kind of crazy that as long as the New York Knicks have been a have been a bad NBA team they haven't had the number one overall pick in the NBA draft since 1985. That was the year the Knicks not only won the lottery but also got it right and drafted the player I would spend my childhood cheering for, Center from Georgetown Patrick Ewing. The Knicks are hoping Ewing can come through for the team again and help land the number one overall pick in this year's Lottery.
