Joe Namath's greatest and most well known moment occurred in the infancy of the NFL in Super Bowl III.

In a game where the Baltimore Colts were double-digit favorites, Joe Namath led the underdog New York Jets to a surprising 16-7 victory.

Three days prior to the game, Namath made a bold prediction, guaranteeing the Jets would beat the Colts on the games biggest stage.  At that time, it was believed that NFL teams (Colts) were more skilled than the AFL teams (Jets) and that the Colts, led by Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas, were almost a sure bet to win Super Bowl III.

The game itself was very uneventful.  The Jets had a 16-0 lead before Unitas entered the game. He had been on the sideline with an injured elbow for the majority of the contest. Either way, the Colts offense was just completely overmatched by the Jets defense as they forced 4 interceptions of Unitas and starter Earl Morrall.

As the game winded down and the Jets with a two-score lead, the guarantee made by Namath became a reality. As the teams retreated from the field Namath was captured wagging his finger in the air, signifying the Jets being the number-one team in the entire league.
