The Albany Firebirds made a smart decision by leaving the Arena Football League on Wednesday.  The league had total dysfunction in 2024 but the Firebirds were obviously clear in it.  Head coach Damon Ware did a tremendous job in his first year.  The future is bright for the organization overall as the ownership is rock solid and has a great foundation.  The roster is talented too and they will add even more players in the offseason.  Below is my quick take on this as seen in The Times Union:

The Albany Firebirds is no longer in the Arena Football League because they saw the handwriting on the wall. The AFL went from 16 teams went to 8 very quickly when one team after another folded. The Albany Firebirds were the model team last in the AFL but ownership is making the right decision pull out of a poorly run league. The Firebirds show signs of returning to the glory days both on the field, but they need connects with the right field and the AFL is clearly not it.

I can't wait for next year to begin because the buzz is back here around the Capital Region.  And let's be honest, the fans deserve this too.  After everything that happened with Antonio Brown and the dysfunction this season, it was a no brainer move that will benefit all who are involved for the long term.  Here's to an even better year next season and there will be more news to come soon about which league that they will join.
