It is still very surprising to me that owner Steve Cohen and the New York Mets have not signed Pete Alonso.  He is a franchise player who the fanbase loves, but both sides are at a stalemate when it comes to money and the current first baseman market.  Steve Cohen is the richest owner in the MLB and it's not even close, but why can't he and David Stearns fork over a few extra millions for him.  Below is my quick take on this as seen in The Times Union:

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has spent close to $1 billion this offseason, it's puzzling why he won't dig deep one more time and sign free agent first baseman Pete Alonso to a new deal. While I understand Alonso wants more money than the market, is willing to pay him, he's still a great player who has devoted his entire MLB career playing for the New York Mets and there is something to be said about that. Alonso fits nicely with Juan Soto and proved and proved at the end of last season he can still hit at a high level.

I hope both sides can come to terms here soon otherwise the Mets will certainly miss Pete Alonso big time.  The Mets will still have a talented roster on paper with or without him which includes Juan Soto.  This will be very interesting to follow what happens in the coming days with the Mets and first baseman Pete Alonso.
