Blueprint For New York Jets Turnaround May Change Quickly

Fans of NFL gossip and rumors love mid-April. The Draft is next Thursday and the New York Jets, with 2 picks in the top 10 in 2022, are in the midst of many of those whispers. Wednesday afternoon, within a few hours of each other, ESPN reported that San Francisco 49ers All Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel and Arizona Cardinals All Pro quarterback Kyler Murray were both tied to the New York Jets.

General manager Joe Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh have a unique set of cards in their hand going into this year's NFL Draft. The Jets have 9 picks in the first 5 rounds including 2 in the first and second rounds each. That gives that options to maneuver in so many ways.

The Jets have nearly $16 million in cap space, after free agency. That gives Gang Green the ability to take on salary through a trade. Lastly, the Jets have stunk. Everything and everyone is on the table, if it means winning. Even last year's number one pick, quarterback Zach Wilson, could be traded for the right return.

Depth is important for Robert Saleh. The former rookie head coach will begin to get less slack from Jets fans and the media in year two. He and Douglas are expected to turn this team around quickly. New York did a fantastic job in free agency, filling some key holes on the offensive line, tight end and the defensive backfield. However, this was a bad roster that Saleh inherited. The Jets can't afford to trade away too many of this year's draft picks, even if the moves are for dynamic stars like Samuel or Murray.

This will be Joe Douglas's third NFL Draft. The first 3 picks of his 2020, Mekhi Becton, Denzel Mims and Ashtyn Davis have been back picks so far. In 2021 Douglas took Zach Wilson, Alijah Vera-Tucker and Elijah Moore. That class seems to have done better with the input of Saleh instead of former Jets head coach Adam Gase. Douglas isn't going to get many more opportunities to turn this ship around. This could be his last draft, if he doesn't get this blueprint right.
