The University of Albany women’s basketball team captured its third consecutive America East Championship on Monday, defeating Stony Brook 70-46.

The win moves the Great Danes to 28-4 overall and earns them a spot in the NCAA tournament for the third straight year. UAlbany will find out its matchup during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, March 17 (7 p.m.).

UAlbany avenged its only league loss of the season, handling the Seawolves from the opening-tip in the win.

Shereesha Richards led the way with 26 points, seven rebounds and four steals en route to winning tournament MVP honors.

Megan Craig joined the conference player of the year on the all-tournament team. Craig had seven points, six rebounds and two blocks. She had 23 in the semifinal win over Hartford.

The Danes were suffocating on defense, forcing 22 Stony Brook turnovers and limiting the Seawolves to just 25 percent shooting on the afternoon.

Stony Brook beat UAlbany on March 1. That was the first America East loss for the Great Danes since Jan. 28, 2012.

The Danes fell 59-55 in the 2013 NCAA tournament to the University of North Carolina, and lost to Texas A&M in 2012.
