Former UAlbany Grad Takes Over Robert Morris Lacrosse

Scott Marr is entering his 22nd season at the helm of the UAlbany men's lacrosse program this year. Over his tenure, Marr has taken the Great Danes to the NCAA tournament 10 times. He's won 6 NCAA tournament games, including a quarterfinal victory in 2018 to propel the local state university to the NCAA Final Four at Gillette Stadium. I could go on but you get the picture. Scott is a great coach and a terrific teacher of the game.

That last skill has sent some of Marr's players skyrocketing through the Division I coaching ranks. Siena men's lacrosse coach Liam Gleason is a Scott Marr pupil. Gleason played for UAlbany and then coached under Marr until he took the job leading the Saints following the Final Four run in 2018.

The tradition of UAlbany Great Dane lacrosse players graduating and taking over a Division I lacrosse programs continued on Tuesday. Former University at Albany men's lacrosse player Craig McDonald was named head men's lacrosse coach at Robert Morris University. McDonald graduated UAlbany in 2008, and was a four-year member of the men's lacrosse team playing for head coach Scott Marr. He appeared in 61 games for the Great Danes, scoring three goals and recording three assists as a defender, while winning 148 ground balls and causing 13 turnovers.

McDonald spent the last seven season on the coaching staff at UMass, serving as associate head coach starting after the 2018 season. McDonald oversaw the instruction of the Minutemen defense and goalkeepers. His coaching career started immediately after graduation when he joined the staff at Union College, before additional stops at Siena and Rutgers.

Craig McDonald was part of the 2007 UAlbany Great Danes lacrosse team that went 15-3 and earned a berth into the NCAA quarterfinals. That team also featured current UAlbany assistant coach Merrick Thomson. The '07 squad took down five ranked teams during the regular season, including #6 Johns Hopkins in the season opener, and won its first 11 games of the season. Many point to that team as the group that made the national lacrosse community take notice of the young successful UAlbany lacrosse program.
