The Solar Eclipse is scheduled to pass over New York State today, Monday April 8th, between 3:15pm and 3:30pm. During this time the moon will pass between the earth and sun, turning day into night for 1.5 minutes to 3.5 minutes. Now, where will you be watching from?

If you have plans to travel today, especially along the New York State Thruway, there are some things you will need to be aware of and some definite "do's and don'ts" as defined by the New York State Police.

The New York State Thruway Authority is aware that the Solar Eclipse is expected to draw visitors from across the northeast to view this rare phenomenon. Travelers are encouraged to arrive at their destination early and leave well after the eclipse has ended. Travelers should expect long delays on roadways throughout the state on Monday and Tuesday, April 8 and 9.

Here are some do's and don'ts, according to a post on the New York State Police X Page, as they pertain to the New York State Thruway.

  • DO use parking areas such as service areas, text stop locations and park and ride lots for short-term parking
  • DO NOT park on the shoulder of the highway or stop in the middle of traffic
  • DO find a safe viewing location off the Thruway system
  • DO NOT block traffic
  • DO obey all traffic laws and follow highway safety messaging
  • DO NOT stand alongside the highway or moving traffic
  • DO give yourself extra time for travel
  • DO NOT grill or use open flame on thruway property.
