New York Yankees’ Phenom Gets Emotional After Life-Changing News (WATCH)
When you find out that you've made the Opening Day roster of the New York Yankees for the first time, it's a pretty big deal.
That said, when you learn that you've also been named the team's Opening Day shortstop, and are set to man the same spot on the diamond as legends like Derek Jeter, it may be a bit overwhelming. The New York Yankees told 21-year old Anthony Volpe that both of those things had come true in a meeting over the weekend.
His reaction was one that you absolutely have to see.
Anthony Volpe Has Emotional Moment After Huge New York Yankees' News
News began to circulate on social media on Sunday that the New York Yankees had made a critical roster decision, one that gives a huge opportunity to one of the team's prized prospects.
The prospect in-question is infielder Anthony Volpe, and here's how the team told him the good news:
As soon as Volpe heard the news, he was greeted by family and friends in the home dugout of the Yankees' spring training facility. Here's how that went:
What a classy move by the organization, and by the team's manager, Aaron Boone. It's not a groundbreaking thing for a team to make this type of moment extra special for a young player. That being said, it does require a coaching staff to go above-and-beyond in order to make it special, and not every staff in baseball is willing to do that.
To his credit, Volpe has earned his spot on the Yankees' roster, and in the team's starting lineup. He tied for the team-lead in at-bats during Spring Training, and managed to hit .314 during his time in Tampa. He's played well in the field, and has responded well to adversity while in competition with Oswald Peraza and Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
As the spring wore on, Volpe continued to play well, while Peraza's offensive output began to slide. Then, the Yankees started moving IKF around the diamond, first to center field, then to the catching position. It was clear that he was no longer the team's shortstop, and it would go to either Volpe or Peraza.
By the time last week came to an end, it seemed as though it was Volpe's job to lose. He won the position outright, and now, Yankees' fans can get excited about watching their next great shortstop take the field.
