Ryan Howard had a dreadful series against the St. Louis Cardinals.  Howard was only 2 for 19 (.105) in the National League Division Series against St. Louis.  In a series-deciding 1-0 loss in Game 5 to the Cardinals, Howard grounded out to second base for the final out of the game.  He injured his Achilles tendon as he was running to first base.  He went done in pain as the Cardinals celebrated their series win.

The Phillies released a statement regarding Howard's injury and his playing status for the start of next season.  "He cannot have surgery until the swelling resolves, and it has not been determined who will perform the surgery.  Recovery time won't be known until after the surgery is complete, and there is no guarantee he will be ready for spring training."
